Welcome to another Monday Member Spotlight! Every monday, we will feature a new FloridaACE member who will share insight into their position, profession, and life! They’ll also be sharing with us why it’s so important for Employers & Career Service professionals to join FloridaACE! These spotlights will allow you to get to know other members within the Association!
Today we got a chance to get to know Lianet Escandell, the System Support Specialist for Florida Gulf Coast University in the Office of Internships & Cooperative Programs! Lianet is originally from Havana, Cuba and is giving readers an inside look into her life and career journey!
What did you major in, in college? Metallurgy & Materials Engineering
What is your career journey? (How did you get into the role you are currently in?) In the same year that I started at FGCU as the Program Assistant, I helped launch the Office of Internships & Cooperative Programs and that involved adopting the new Symplicity software. My background included an Associate’s degree in Computer Science and this knowledge helped me to love what I was doing and grow professionally. This experience allowed me to transition into my new role as the Systems Support Specialist, Transition Services.
Tell us a little bit about your position? As the Systems Support Specialist, I custom build experiential learning forms to help centralize data and bring offices campus-wide together. I also help with support and training for new users and employers.
Why Career Services? During my college career in Cuba, I did eight internships that helped me in my professional and academic experience. One of my goals in my life is to bring those opportunities to students to help them add more experience to their college lives.
One piece of advice for someone looking to enter into a position like yours? The only way to do great work is to love what you do! That is my inspiration every morning!
What motivates you every day, to do what you do? My team is awesome. Also, I like when people can use technology to simplify a process and be more productive.
When is your birthday? 11/30/1990
What are your hobbies outside of work? Traveling, dancing, and cooking!
What do you wish you knew more about? I wish I knew more about English. This is my third year in the United States, but I would like to be more fluent in English to be able to communicate all my ideas!
Why do you think it is important for new professionals and institutions within the state of Florida to join FloridaACE? FloridaACE is a really energetic and full of knowledge conference. Every college who joins will benefit in more than one way. In my personal experience, I feel now more involved and more confident because I saw this conference as a support group where we can share ideas and take feedback about our programs.
