“Shoulding” All Over Yourself

Should …Should you use the word should?????

During my graduate degree one of my counseling classes had a guest speaker who was talking to us about “shoulding all over yourself.” At first I thought I heard it wrong and he said SH***** all over yourself…for those who were not paying attention, they were now! I was intrigued.

How often have I said this?

and….do some of my students think the same?

It was time for a change…”should” became my 4 letter word.

Instead, I began to replace “should” with many new phrases: I would love to, how about, what if and so many more. It is a consistent work in progress, but life is better without “should”

It has been many years since I have used the word “should”. Recently when someone new started in our office, I was reminded how “should” represents “it’s not enough,” disappointment and expectations, and the need to blog about it.

As career counselors, we have the ability to empower our students with a world of possibilities and I am thankful for the opportunity.

Call for Vendors

Dear FloridaACE Members:

We are looking forward to this year’s annual conference, to be held in June 2015 in St. Augustine, Florida! This year we are looking to increase our vendor participation. We have received participation from vendors such as College Central Network and Career Fair Plus in recent years and look forward to increasing participation in this year’s 50th anniversary event! This is an opportunity to state which vendors you would like to see at this year’s event. Vendors will be able to:

  • Spotlight their organization during the annual Vendor Spotlight.
  • Reach their target audience.
  • Meet with key decision-makers face-to-face.
  • Make valuable contacts.
  • Build brand and name recognition.
  • Demonstrate their products and services.

2014 Award Winners

We are seeking nominations for three of our organization’s prestigious awards:

John T. Brownlee Leadership Award – This award was established by the Florida Association of Colleges & Employers in recognition of John T. Brownlee’s contribution and tireless efforts on behalf of the organization.  In John’s years (1977-1986) of involvement with FloridaACE, he served as a board member and as president.  He brought enormous energy and enthusiasm to the organization and this award serves as an ongoing memorial in recognition of his dedication and commitment.

Student of the Year Award – Each year, FloridaACE presents an award to a deserving student who has demonstrated exceptional achievement in the field of experiential learning.  Any student of a 2 or 4 year Florida higher education institution may be nominated for this award.

New Member Award – The goal of this award is to recognize a new member who is helping to keep FloridaACE strong by volunteering for committees and/or special projects.

As organizations manage employee populations with increasing numbers of retirement-eligible workers, they are investing in hiring the future of the work force. In doing so, most everyone has realized that there’s one group that is particularly important—millennials.

The competition for this demographic is stiff. Although millennials participate in the same number of job interviews as candidates from other generations, they receive 12.5 percent more offers. Organizations are using a variety of tactics to attract and recruit the millennial generation, but how can they sort the millennial myths from reality?

Understanding the millennial generation and their preferences is key. CEB recently researched the ways that millennials undertake a job search and found a few ways that they differ from other generations, and some ways in which they aren’t different at all.
